On Hello Fresh now which has been a pretty good compromise.ConsumerAffairs is not a government agency. Tried out blue apron, didn't like that they didn't presort the meals and ingredient quality felt lower and the meals were average. Sun Basket really changed my view from hating cooking to enjoying it and really improving my skills. I started with Sun Basket which is still my favorite (but $$). Nowadays, I have a lot more time to chop and cook. I even went so far as to serve my GF a plated Freshly meal once just to see someones impression without knowing it was pre prepared. When I was really short on time and ate out of the plastic the meal experience was cheapened. I think Freshly tasted better and had better instructions, but at the time if you didn't change your order manually Freshly automatically sent you the same thing every week and that was a dealbreaker for me.Īs dumb as it may seem, I found plating Freshly meals to have an effect on my satisfaction of the meal. But god damn was it nice to come home and have dinner ready in 2 minutes Monday through Friday when I got home at 8 pm with no energy. Compared to full mealkits, it certainly lacks a bit in quality and quantity (I usually supplemented it with rice). I did Freshly while I was doing a pretty demanding coding bootcamp. While I now prefer full mealkits, I don't think it makes a lot of sense to compare them vs the pre made ones. I agree with most things you said, but have some comments. I've done Freshly, Factor 75, Sun Basket, Blue Apron and Hello Fresh in that order. Compared to Hello Fresh and Home Chef, I'd rather pay a little less to actually cook the food, get better portions, and have better recipes. Overall, I don't think I can recommend Freshly. I quite liked the chicken and spring pea risotto, and cod cakes. Some recipes are meh, like ole chicken and smoky chile sauce, golden oven fried chicken and mash. Also, since the method of cooking is microwave, you end up with pools of sauce or oil at the bottom while other areas were too dry. Food is hit or miss: In general, most of them are pretty oily, especially pasta meals. All the meals I chose were between 450-600 calories, which technically is fine, but I never felt full after eating a "meal." What Freshly calls a meal is just much smaller than what Hello Fresh and Home Chef calls a meal, and that's surprising considering the price tag. Small portions: You can see it in the pictures.Personally, having tried Hello Fresh and Home Chef, I don't think it's worth it to pay $2-3 more per meal (compared to the other services discounted) given the quality of the food and the amount of time actually saved. Essentially, you pay more so that you spend less time cooking. since the food is already cooked for me, all I have to do is microwave. Yes, I understand that this is a different service from the likes of Hello Fresh, Home Chef, etc. Even with a coupon, I ended up paying over $7 a meal. The price: I found Freshly to be more expensive than other meal kits.Hello all, I just tried a 12-meal delivery with Freshly before deciding that it's not for me, and this post will explain why.
